Luisa Popovic is a New York City-based hairstylist and wig designer with an eye toward intentional, unique, and one-of-a-kind looks. Born and raised in Oakland, CaIlifornia, Luisa decamped for London to study at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in 2013. While there, Luisa acquired a deep knowledge and solid foundation for cutting and technique—but wanted to push the old-school boundaries of such storied styles. In 2014, she moved to New York, where she took those technical skills and branched out with her own detail-oriented hair concepts. Luisa began creating styles and individualized head pieces for Complex, Nylon Japan, Paper Magazine, Office Magazine, and musicians like Kehlani, Eartheater, and The Blssm. Her own original art installation, “2200,” appeared at the Manhattan gallery Wallplay on Canal in 2019.
During lockdown, Luisa shifted her focus to wig-making, and started her own company, Freaky Beautiful—which aims to make alternative haircuts accessible to those who don’t necessarily want to commit to a permanent avant-garde style. Since then, Luisa has expanded into commercial work, making wigs and original hairstyling for brands including Vitaly jewelry’s winter 2021 campaign, as well as KARA accessories.
In all of her works, Luisa zeroes in on being versatile and capable of working with models of all hair types and textures. Teamwork and collaboration, in addition to staying in touch with the evolution and future of beauty, is paramount to her creative process and ethos.
Luisa has been featured in both Dazed Beauty and iD magazine as an artist to watch in New York City, and was interviewed for Infringe Magazine’s print edition.
